Three-dimensional visualization of fish morphometry and acoustic backscatter
نویسندگان
چکیده
Theoretical acoustic models of fish are used to explain variability in backscatter measurements, improve estimation of target size, and improve target recognition and discrimination among acoustic targets. Acoustic backscatter models that incorporate fish morphology potentially provide more realistic predictions of echo amplitudes than models that approximate morphology using simple geometric shapes. Procedures to obtain digital representations of a fish’s body and swimbladder are presented. These digital images are used in a Kirchhoff ray-mode model to predict backscatter amplitude as a function of fish length, acoustic frequency, and angle of insonification. Backscatter amplitude can be displayed as one-dimensional curves, two-dimensional response surfaces, and a three-dimensional backscattering surface (i.e., ambit). ©2001 Acoustical Society of America PACS numbers: 43.30.Gv, 43.30.Sf, 43.30.Ft Date Received: 14 April 2001 Date Accepted: 21 October 2001

Volumetric three-dimensional intravascular ultrasound visualization using shape-based nonlinear interpolation
BACKGROUND Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a standard imaging modality for identification of plaque formation in the coronary and peripheral arteries. Volumetric three-dimensional (3D) IVUS visualization provides a powerful tool to overcome the limited comprehensive information of 2D IVUS in terms of complex spatial distribution of arterial morphology and acoustic backscatter information. Co...
متن کاملInvestigation of acoustic properties of silica coated gold nanoparticle as contrast agent for Ultrasonography
Interoduction: Ultrasound images have often low contrast due to small differences in acoustic impedance between different tissues. Air or gas microbubbles that surrounded by membrane are most of the contrast agents in ultrasound imaging. Problems such as instability in sound pressure and inability in penetrating from the blood vessel into body tissues limited the use of microbubbles into the in...

Volume and boundary acoustic backscatter envelope fluctuations are characterized from data collected by the Toroidal Volume Search Sonar (TVSS), a 68 kHz cylindrical array capable of 360 degrees multibeam imaging in the vertical plane perpendicular to its axis. The data are processed to form acoustic backscatter images of the seafloor, sea surface, and horizontal and vertical planes in the volu...
متن کاملComparing the modelled and measured target-strength variability of walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma
Many biological and physical factors potentially affect target strength. While these sources have been identified, few studies have compared the relative effects of individual factors. Modelled and measured target strengths in non-dimensional metrics were used to compare and rank the effects of fish length, tilt, depth, and acoustic frequency on backscatter intensity. Ex situ measurements of ta...
متن کاملA method for evaluating the effects of biological factors on fish target strength
Understanding the relationship between fish biology and target strength potentially improves the accuracy of acoustic assessments. The effects of individual biological factors (e.g., length, tilt, and depth) on backscatter amplitude have been examined, but the relative contribution of each factor has not been quantified. Dimensionless ratios, which facilitate comparison of disparate quantities,...
